Hi, I’m Ashley.I’m usually directing— or dancing.
Shanghai-born, globally raised, currently Vancouver-based.
“Where are you from?” has never had a short answer.
Shanghai is home — the root of how I see the world, and the place where I grew up as a nerdy kid playing lots of accordion and piano. I later studied in Grenoble and Los Angeles, then followed work, people, and good ideas through New York, Salzburg, Chiang Mai, and plenty of places in between.
For the past decade, I’ve turned that curiosity into stories. I’ve worked in newsrooms, on brand sets, inside queer communities, and at one very eventful dating-show villa. My favorite projects usually begin with a slightly unreasonable idea — and a group of people I genuinely want to be around.
I like building worlds from scratch: bringing the right people together, setting the tone, and creating the conditions for something real to happen.
If I’m not directing, I’m probably dancing.
I started Hip Hop and House in 2020 and got hooked on the mix of discipline, groove, and community. I even performed at a New York Liberty halftime show — still an extremely fun sentence to say out loud.
So yes, my life is basically directing or dancing.
